    Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

    1. Engine Speed Sensor

    The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

    The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

    If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

    Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

    2. Injectors

    Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero Ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

    I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

    I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

    3. Fuel Pump

    The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or in a local parts store.
